Scary Shit

I just thought that I would share this disturbing little story with everyone. Yesterday my dad injured himself while playing soccer with his kids (including me) and some friends. Playing without shoes (because of the little kids involved in the game) he got his little toe caught in the wire of the fence neighbouring the field that we were playing on. Now this might be hard to imagine, but he ripped a good centimetre into his foot and broke two bones. While playing a friendly little game of soccer. Armageddon!

No, the world ain't ending. Not today anyway. I did, however, get to attend the Armageddon pulp expo (also known as a comic convention). I was there strictly as a visitor, no booth yet (maybe next year, or the year after that, or... well you get the idea). Anyway, I got to meet all kinds of interesting people, including Red Star creator and all round genius Christian Gossett. Fantastic. I'm sure the cons in the U.S. of A. get wayyy more love in regards of celebrity attendance, but for little NZ it was pretty good. Of course, after seeing some of the masters in action my own work seems woefully inadequate - but it was also very inspiring.

So Long YouTube, We Hardly Knew Ye!

I am certain that by now nearly everybody in the online community has heard the news that Google has bought YouTube, home of the funny video. Unfortunately they have also stated that they want to make actual money with it. This means that another bastion of collective creativity will likely fall prey to wanton commercialization. Maybe it's just me, but I think this is a little bit like what it must have felt like for the settlers in the wild west when the big railroads began to move into town. Sure, there is the smell of opportunity in the air, but a little of that frontier spirit is crushed as the big boys move in.
